Os gregos são alérgicos à austeridade

Marisa Matias

E a Grécia aqui tão perto

A lição do super-espião

New Directive protects animals in scientific research PDF Print
Written by Redacção de The Week

The European Parliament adopted a directivewich main goal is to promote scientific research into alternative methods that eliminate or minimize the chances of suffering of animals used. Marisa Matias, MEP from United Left (GUE/LNG), stressed the importance of the new law but added that there is still much more debate to do about it.

The directive requires the development of "alternative methods” in order to “eliminate or minimize any possibility of pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm inflicted on the animals."
It also stipulates that "the use of nonhuman primates should only be allowed in biomedical fields essential for the benefit of human beings in cases there are no currently available alternative methods of replacement." The use of nonhuman primates should also be allowed in acts "to fundamental research for the conservation of species of nonhuman primates or when that practices, including xenotransplantation, are related to conditions that could endanger human lives or cases which have major impact on everyday life of a person, or debilitating conditions. "
Marisa Matias intervened in the debate arguing that "we must have the ability to develop and promote alternative methods to the use of animals for scientific purposes”, adding that much more and deeper debate is needed.
This MEP from the Portuguese Left Bloc stressed in general terms that there are choices to make in this regard: "Should or not the animal welfare be subjugated to the value of human health?" Or, "what is the strategy of European research in cases involving human health and basic research?". Or, "how to avoid the suspension of European medical research that ultimately could lead to its destruction." The same MEP has warned that the Europeans cannot be happy with the suspension of the use of animals allowing at the same time that the investigation be transferred to countries "where there is no control over animal welfare."
